1. Different items need different storage
Try boxes or canvas bins and the likes. For example, shoes can be stored in shoe storage while off-season clothing (especially if you're living overseas with four seasons in check), you can store your clothing separately. This helps organise your closet better. Tools such as cleaning tools or fixing tool can also be stored in separate containers so it's easier to find.
2. Be realistic about furniture needs
Be realistic about how you use the space and what furniture will fit those uses. Buy only what you need and if you deemed it's necessary and will be put to good use.
3. Invest in shelving—and some of your decor
Shelving is your best friend in a small home, and it’s something that can be installed on the cheap or as an investment. And while open shelving serves as a nice juxtaposition to closed-off storage, it should be reserved for your most prized possessions.
